Theme: Strategies for learning in business
Each year, the British Institute for Learning and Development organises and runs 6 FREE member events. Each is based on a different learning and development topic or theme. These events are all based in different regions of the UK and they important to attend for professional development. The events are also a great opportunity to network with fellow BILD members!
The forthcoming Cardiff Connect event will draw on a topic and its related issues which is becoming increasingly relevant for many L&D practitioners as well as learners in the workplace.
How can we build successful strategies for learning in business? What is best practice and what is the cost? Organisations represented at this event will demonstrate some of their stratgies and techniques for implementing learning in business and how we might improve these strategies to become more holistic and inclusive.

In this presentation, Jack Wills, Director of TADS Media Ltd, will demonstrate how the use of online assessment has become an integral part of employers’ strategy for assessing learning in business. Case studies from a variety of scenarios will be given which illustrate this.

Special Issue for Reality-Based Interaction Evaluation Methods and Challenges
Editors: Georgios Christou, Effie Lai-Chong Law, William Green, Kasper Hornbæk
The special issue seeks submissions that include, but are not be limited to:
Evaluation methods that have been created and designed specifically for RBIs.
Case studies of successful and unsuccessful evaluations of RBIs, how those were performed, and why they were successful (or why they failed).
Discussions of frameworks that enable the evaluation of RBIs, through objective and subjective measures.
Descriptions and evaluations of tools that support decisions regarding which interaction style would be appropriate for a specific task, environment and goal.
Articles must be based on original research, and to the standards of the International Journal of Human Computer Studies (IJHCS). Complete articles must be submitted by the deadline of 15th of January. Papers will be subject to the full review process of the IJHCS.
On Thursday October 8th, 2009, Erik Duval and Ralf Klamma presented and discussed in the online round table on personalization and learning. In the context of the ROLE project they mainly talked about understanding the use and the development of personal learning environments (PLE). Because PLE is about self-regulated learning, learners should know about the gap between their actual learning processes and their set learning goals. Thanks to Cris, Martin and Graham for organizing it. Thanks to the audience for their patience.

From 7-8 October a meeting and discussions on psycho-pedagogical foundation, community aspects, and their formal models took place at the Hotel Weizer in Graz, Austria.
On Wednesday, 30th September 2009 during the EC-TEL 2009 the Industry Track “Synergies of Learning and Working” took place. It was led by Volker Zimmermann from IMC AG, Germany. He introduced the session by the presentation “Synergies of Learning and Working - Disruptive Learning Solutions and Innovations“. The following two presentations were also held by ROLE-members:
On Thursday, 1st October Karen Velasco delivered a presentation on PLEs and ROLE at the World of Learning Conference and Exhibition 2009 (WOLCE 2009) in Birmingham. Approximately 100 people attended this session and she received some excellent feedback following it. In addition ROLE flyers were handed out, and these were well-received.
It was the pleasure of the ROLE project to hand over the best paper award for the ICL 2009 special track about mashing up learning environments MASHL to Hendrik Drachsler (see picture left) from the Open University of the Netherlands. The ceremony took place at the EC-TEL 2009 in Nice, France. Ralf Klamma (see picture right), technical coordinator of the ROLE project is handing over an iPod Touch 16 GB to Hendrik as a material appreciation of his outstanding contribution to the goals of the ROLE project.
